Where Australia buys used
Australia has an active second-hand market across local classifieds, fashion resale and auctions. Here are the platforms that matter.
The top Australian marketplaces
- Facebook Marketplace — the biggest local marketplace for furniture, appliances and household goods.
- Gumtree — long-established Aussie classifieds for cars, furniture and general goods.
- eBay.com.au — the national option for electronics, parts and collectibles.
- Depop & Vinted — growing for fashion resale.
- Marketplace + local "buy nothing" groups — great for free and cheap local finds.
Australia-specific tips
- Meet safely for local pickups in busy public places; bring someone for higher-value or at-home deals.
- Cars: run a PPSR check for finance owing and write-off/stolen status before buying — the equivalent of a history report (see checking a car's history).
- Pay safely: PayID/bank transfer to strangers has no protection — prefer cash on inspection locally, or PayPal goods & services for posted items. Watch for overpayment scams (more here).
- Distances are large — factor postage and long collection drives into the deal.
