Big savings — if it's genuine
Pre-owned designer handbags can cost far less than boutique prices, and many hold their value well. But designer bags are among the most counterfeited items in the world, so authentication is everything. Here's how to buy with confidence.
What to examine
- Craftsmanship & stitching. Luxury bags have even, tight, straight stitching. Crooked, loose or uneven stitches are a fake tell.
- Hardware. Zips, clasps and feet should feel heavy and solid, with crisp, correctly-spelled engraving. Cheap, light or misspelled hardware is a red flag.
- Logo & font. Compare the logo, spacing and font against verified references — fakes often get subtle details wrong.
- Serial / date codes & stamps. Know what the brand actually used for that era and check they match; but remember codes can be faked, so never rely on them alone.
- Materials & smell. Genuine leather feels and smells like leather; a strong chemical/plastic smell is suspicious.
- Dust bag, box & receipt add confidence but are also faked — treat them as supporting evidence, not proof.
If the price is far below market for a sought-after bag, assume it's fake until proven otherwise. Genuine sellers of valuable bags know exactly what they have.
Use authentication for higher-value buys
For anything expensive, buy from platforms with built-in authentication (e.g. Vestiaire Collective, The RealReal) or pay a trusted third-party authentication service before completing the purchase. The fee is tiny next to the cost of a fake. Reverse-image-search the listing photos too (see avoiding scams).
